1. Story (10 min)
2. Detectives ask questions. (10 min)
3. Detectives tell the storyteller what assumptions she might hold. (5 -10 min)
4. Detectives give alternative versions of the events. (5 -10 min)
5. Audit of what has been learned
- Storyteller talks. No interruptions.
2. Detectives ask questions. (10 min)
- 1 question at a time.
- Ask only for clarification of details.
- No opinions or suggestions offered at this time.
- No judgmental questions such as: "Did you really believe that...?" or 'Didn't you think to...?" or "Why wouldn't you just...?" or "Are you seriously saying...?' or "Do you mean to tell us that...?"
3. Detectives tell the storyteller what assumptions she might hold. (5 -10 min)
- They state these assumptions tentatively, descriptively, and non-judgmentally.
- "It seems as if..."
- "I wonder if one assumption you might e holding is that...?"
- "Is it possible that you assumed that...?"
4. Detectives give alternative versions of the events. (5 -10 min)
- They describe how others involved might have viewed them, not saying whether these perceptions are accurate.
- No judgments allowed
5. Audit of what has been learned
- No ground rules. Detectives can give whatever advice they want.
